The world is in turmoil. The United States has declared war on terrorism. How much authority does the Pope have in all of this? What do you think about the Union of the Vatican and America in terms of world peace?

.Sorry Andy, but the Pope has absolutely nothing to do with the government of the United States. The Vatican is only separate country in Rome, Italy. The head of the Catholic Church. And the Catholic Church only.
It would be nice if the Pope was capable of galvanizing Christians into one mind set and to stop our bickering between our various Christian denominations. I don't think, that's going to happen either.
I'd love to think that either the Pope or America could be responsible for world peace- But unfortunately until people on an individual level start to realize a man's life is worth more than any ideology- there will be no peace.

The pope has no authority over anything other than the Catholic church. However, he has always tried to negotiate peace between countries. It was interesting to me to discover, after John Paul's death, how involved the Pope was in international politics and how he had so much influence in the bringing down of the Berlin Wall. Incredible. The Pope is effective because he is only interested in world peace and is NOT aligned with any one country. He believed the war against the terrorists in Aghanistan was just but not the war in Iraq. Obviously, he had no influence over Bush whose mind was closed to anything he didn't want to hear.

You will have to look this up, but if I remember right, Bush has established ties with the Vatican.
