I have heard that cell phones pick up the signal from the nearest cell tower and as you move you switch from tower to tower. But let's say that I'm travelling really fast within the coverage of a single tower, like on a military fighter jet or something like that. Does that tower's coverage just cover the area and if you're within that geographical region you'll get a signal no matter how fast you're travelling throught it?

If you were going fast enough then their would be a Doppler shift but traveling at the speed of a fighter jet would produce such a negligible effect that there would be no problem for the tower to interpret the signal.

All the above answers dont take into account that fact that
when your in plane or jet fighter, you are at 30000 to 50000 feet above sea level. The closet towers are in the order of miles away.
Most cell phones don't have enough energy in their tranmitters
for the signal to make it this far!!

Very nice question, but in that case the net uses the "roaming" so you can use your cell phone like visitor. No problem the plane speed, those signals travel at light speed. No plane can get that speed.

yes, if you are within the link tower coverage, you'll get the signal... We are not considering here relativistic speeds.
