When does it get to be way too much and a bit overboard?

When you have to sacrifice your lifestyle to supply people false happiness. When Christmas becomes about the gifts and not the giving. When Christmas becomes a holiday and not a holy day.

Anything more than what you can afford is too much. That's why there used to be Christmas Club bank accounts, so you could sock away a little all year long and have a good Christmas, or whatever holiday, or vacation, at the end of the year. I'd love to see those come back, but you know the banks won't allow it.

If you go outside your budget, and end up paying for it 2 - 3 months later - then you spent to much.

If you can't meet your other bills, then you have spent to much.

Make sure you have your bills covered first. Christmas Club accounts are a great thing to start right after Christmas, then you have a nice savings for the following year.

You spend what you can afford. I spend about 50 on everyone( brothers, parents, hubby, inlaws). Although a little more on my son. But we don't focus just on the gifts. Gifts are just a plus to this wonderful holiday.

I try to do about 25-40$ per person.

Obviously spending more on your mother/father/sisters/brother/hus/wife etc.

I think if you spend over 2000 and you dont have kids to buy junk toys for you are CRAZY!

That is a very good question! You should always spend within your means. Don't buy something you know it will send you into dept, or will 'max out' on a credit card. (i.e. buy something you can afford!)

Spend what you can afford and remember it's not what you give that counts but the thought that counts.
