Let's denote the number of fish he caught on day 1 as x. Thus, here are the totals for each day:
day 1 = x
day 2 = x+3
day 3 = x+6
day 4 = x+9
day 5 = x+12
day 6 = x+15
day 7 = x+18
day 8 = x+21
day 9 = x+24
day 10 = x+27
day 11 = x+30
day 12 = x+33
day 13 = x+36
day 14 = x+39
Adding these together will get you the total fish = 385. Solving, you get:
14x + 273 = 385
Solving, you get x = 8
Thus, these are the totals he caught each day:
day 1 = 8
day 2 = 11
day 3 = 14
day 4 = 17
day 5 = 20
day 6 = 23
day 7 = 26
day 8 = 29
day 9 = 32
day 10 = 35
day 11 = 38
day 12 = 41
day 13 = 44
day 14 = 47

Hope this helps

The way I go about a problem like this is to start with the 3 more caught on the second day, and then add up all of the gains. This leaves you with the baseline number of fish to be divided by all 14 days. So, Adding the three from the second day, plus the 6 from the third, and so on you come up with a total of 273 fish from the daily gains, leaving 112 baseline, which divided by the 14 days leaves eight for the first day, 11 for the second, 14 for the third, and so on.

if x is the catch from day 1:
14*x+ 3*(1+2+3+....+13)=385
14*x +3*91 = 385
x= (385-273)/14=112/14=8
Answer:
Day 1 = 8 catches
Day 2 = 11catches
etc

I say 9 fish per day. Because he caught 27.5 fish per day if you divide 385/14. But then to get the x+3 factor you have to divide the 27.5/3=9.16

x+[x+3]+[x+6].....[x+39]
14x+3+6+9+12+15+18+21+24+27+30+33+36+39 or
FORMULA a=3 n = 14
nx + [ (an(n-1)) / (a-1) ] Sequence summation
nx + [ (3n*(n-1))/2 ]
14 x + [ (42*13)/2 ]
14x + 546/2 = 385
14x + 273 = 385
14x = 112
x = 8
So by day 8,11,14,17,20,23,26,29,32,35,38,41,44,47
