It depends on what you want in a place to live. If you want to be close to the action you should be in Hollywood... lots of fun neighbors, easy access to clubs, and you've got metro rail to keep you out of traffic when you don't want to drive. For somewhat cheap and trendy, Silverlake is a good option, but it has become trendy to the point where it's starting to get pricy. If you like a more laid back lifestyle, but want to keep it cheap, you should consider Santa Monica or some other beach communities. If you want (relatively) safe, somewhat quieter, and cheap, then go to the valley and find a place in the Burbank, Pasadena, Glendale area... but keep in mind it's usually 10-20 degrees hotter in the valley in the summer, because the Hollywood hills block that ocean breeze. If you don't mind a little pollution, consider Long Beach, if it doesn't ruin your commute... Long Beach is one of the cheapest places to live in the area, there's lots of fun things to do like Pine Street (bar hopping), shopping, civic events, and tourist activities... plus you've got the blue line to take you by train to downtown. Hope this helps, and good luck!

If money is no object then I'd say Santa Monica, West Hollywood, certain parts of Burbank, Malibu, Los Feliz...there are tons of beautiful places. However, if you are looking on the cheap (which cheap in LA is $650,000 for an average home), parts of the San Fernando Valley like Valley Village, Toluca Lake, Burbank, even as far out as Monrovia have decent places. I like SFV because you are in the middle of it all - the beach, Hollywood, Pasadena...near all the major freeways. Also, a very fast growing place is Valencia outside of Los Angeles - more picturesque but quickly becoming very populated. If you are renting, though, the nicest and cheapest places are Valley Village, Sherman Oaks, parts of Hollywood, Toluca Lake, and Studio City.

Honey, if you're lookin' for NICE, then stay out of L.A. Nice doesn't apply here. First, you need to define your use of the word Los Angeles. The county of Los Angeles is quite massive & it has over 75 Cities withinin it's boundaries & over 13 million people! The City of Los Angeles has around 3 1/2 million people living there. If by the word NICE, you mean safe & clean with people who work & care about their neighborhoods, then you should explore Burbank or Glendale. If you want good ole'boy white people, then try the Tujunga or Sunland area. Montrose is also consided to be a bit uppity. No matter where you live, drugs are a part of everyday life & you won't be able to escape the people who sell or use them. Your car will suffer the worst. Everyone who lives here has had their car stolen, stripped, or hit & run at least once! Enjoy.

I left Montebello (ghetto) for El Segundo but found areas around Culver City and UCLA to be nice too.

I'd Say the SFV simply because you are pretty much an hour away from EVERYTHING, i mean a simple 20 min drive to the beach takes an hour to get to with traffic

Nice is a relative term. In order to obtain a reply which could perhaps be closest to your needs, YOU need to first define what NICE means to you.
