I used to get my internet from the electric company. It was a dial up, but it came from the phone company. They are working on ways of getting it through electrical outlets though--it is just a matter of time.

I remember reading an article a couple years ago about that specific technology. Though no company is doing it currently, they are researching providing broadband connectivity over an electrical circuit. The technology is similar to DSL, basically they can run the signal at a different frequency than the electricity in order to communicate. I have not heard anything more about it for several years though.

If they get into the business, but typically phone companies handle this.

I don't believe so. I believe the only companies who can give you internet service is phone co.s and cable co.s
