I don't see how the other answers can give you good judgement, because Final Fantasy III for the DS has not even been released yet!

Nintendogs is good if you'd like a "pet"!
You can train a dog or more once you've gained enough credit, also, you may become attached to your dog, if you play well/long enough! It's fun, also you can link up with other players with another ds. This is if you don't mind not playing the next great RPG for the DS.

FFIII is going to include a Mognet type system where you can leave messages with other players from around the world, and possibly receive special items, quests if the right words are used and when, etc. There are over 279,841 different possibilities with the 23 Jobs available for the 4 characters you will have in your party. There will be nice cinemas, and the gameplay and story I heard will be great.

Which ever you choose to get first, know that there will be another time to enjoy the other game you didn't get, for the future. You could choose either, though you may want to choose for the gameplay you want at the moment, or what games your friends have or will be getting, too.

Nintendogs. Final Fantasy is a bunch of anime and japanese people running around looking good and pointy. In my opinion really confusing and the learning curve is steep (Like an hour). Nintendogs is really interactive and it is realistic because you use your voice to call your dog and teach it commands and eventually living with the dog in harmony. Classic Game.

Do to the given popularity of both gaves, Final Fantasy III is much more desired. In my opinion I'd say FF3 is definately better.
