I think it is a direct result of the breaking news about the upcoming articles in the service times magazines. This is the first time that they have ever had an editorial about a serving member of the chain of command. This was a very powerful signal that the low level grunts wanted Rummy out.

As the House of Reps is now Democratic, they will be holding an inquiry on Iraq. Rummy could see the writing on the wall there and got out as if he stayed he would have dug himself into an even bigger hole. Watch out Wolfowitz, you are next!

I think it sends a strong message to everyone that Bush has screwed up big time. For so long, they were all "we're doing fine, stay the course," but now that Rummy's bailed, I think Bush is even more up a creek....
