The way that you phrase your question: "doing drugs", gives the implication of illegal substances. In that case, any doctor or even any relatively educated person in their right mind would strongly advise the mother not to breast feed. Toxins that are in the mothers body, whether they are drugs or diseases, are passed on to the infant through the milk. Even when a mother is on medications for a disease or a disorder, such a psychiatric disorder, her doctor's have to seriously consider what is known about the medicine, the consequences of the mother being taken off of the medication, and the risk of harm for the infant. Mothers who are pregnant and who are breast feeding are advised to avoid even taking over the counter medications, such as Asprin. So your question of whether a mother can give breast milk while doing drugs sounds absolutely absurd. Why would a mother want to risk causing permanent brain damage or possibly even killing the infant that she conceived and carried for nine months when she could easily give him/her formula? I know that studies show that breast milk is better, but when you weigh the consequences of this case, the choice seems obvious.

Practically anything that is ingested by the mother, will be transferred to the baby through breast milk. Wether it be trace amounts or not, it still can be harmful, especially if you're talking about illegal drugs. Not sure why you are asking this, but if you're the mom, you should know better, and not be doing drugs when you have to take care of your baby !

Why would you even want to breast feed if you are taking or doing drugs? Common sense knows any drug can harm your baby. If it's not good for you, what makes you think it won't hurt the baby?

Absolutely not. Whatever the mother ingests or just plain puts in her body, is excreeted through her breast milk.

The answer to this question is NO. Hands down you know the answer!

It seems like you are not asking the question about just any "mother." It sounds like it is a bit more personal to me.

If you ask any doctor they will tell you no. Check out the site below. Enough said.....

is this a trick question or what?

if you are serious and the drugs you are talking about are over the counter,
ask the baby's dr.

if you are talking the hard stuff, it's a stupid question. everyone knows what the mother injests, including ciggarette smoke, the baby has to deal with too.

what 'drugs' is she doing? there are illegal drugs and legal drugs that can cause grave harm to a nursing baby and there are illegal and legal drugs that will not harm the baby.

you'll need to be specific to get a useful answer.

case in point - the healthiest, smartest, best developed babies in Jamaica are the children of the Rastafarians.

If you mean doing illegal drugs and breastfeeding - that's not a good idea.

There are many OTC and prescription meds that are safe for a breastfeeding mother to take if she is ill, etc.
