The living environment can determine how healthy your turtle will be. If you have 2 turtles in a 10 gallon tank than you will have to clean it very frequently. Turtles purge (use the restroom) often and since they must drink the same water this can be very bad for them. I would advise getting a larger tank and a very good filter.

Yes, turtles can die of extreme stress and infection. They shouldn't be with any other turtle if they aren't the same size or if one is more active or aggressive, or of another species. They shouldn't be in a 10 gallon tank anyway unless they are both under an inch long. Turtles need alot of space. They need a high powered filter, basking dock, heat bulb, UVB bulb, and the proper diet. They need water that is not too cold or they can have immune distress and get respiratory infections. You need to get your turtle to a vet ASAP and do some research next time!

Environmental stress is the main reason pet turtles die- too small of a tank (10 gallon tank is about 1/4th of the recommended size for two turtles!), dirty water, poor lighting, low temps, etc.

Another common thing is bad diet.

While there are some diseases between turtles, most of them we worry about actually come from bad cares to begin with.

Here is the thing- there is more misinformation about keeping turtles than there is for any other pet I know of. If you raise a turtle the way popular culture tells you, it will die within months just from the poor care.

Turtles don't just die from being stressed, even if their living environment is very small. They die from other reasons, and the stress makes it harder for their bodies to fight off those other reasons.

Your turtle might have died for any of the following reasons, so see which ones could apply:
You didn't provide it with a full-spectrum (UVA and UVB) basking light; if they can't metabolize calcium, then they die.
If it's a water turtle, you didn't provide it with a basking spot and heat lamp (if it can't climb out of the water to bask, its shell will get soft and moldy and infected, which could kill it).
If its water was too dirty, it could have gotten a bacterial infection.
It could have acquired acute pneumonia, in which case if you didn't bring it in for immediate emergency treatment, it would have died.
Vitamin deficiency; common ones in turtles are vitamin A.

Turtles can die from all sorts of things, but the wrong kind of diet, a lack of clean water, and a lack of a sufficient heating source are the most common offenders.
