My last vacation was in central Florida for this past spring break. I do not have an actual credit card but a bank debit card with the visa (or is it MC logo). Anyway, I was able to rent a car with the agency I booked with (I think this time it was either Avis or Nations...probably Avis), but without having a credit card I had to show proof of my return flight home. I was not required to leave a substantial deposit either (although I do know that some companies do require this).

very unlikely. You'sd have to borrow someone elses card and pay them though they still may not do it and have it be in your name there where I'm sure you need to show ID. That's the only reason to have a credit card that and for plane tickets in the case of an emergency death of someone and you need to fly quickly. Good luck.
