...the passage of a state constitutional amendment against same-sex marriage?

I'm in a two-woman relationship. My legal marriage was taken away by two state's courts. I mourned. Thousands of couples would celebrate if the amendments didn't pass; that, I get.

But why would people for it celebrate? Or, as a woman on one of my debate lists did, say "Yippee" about it?

What, exactly, are they celebrating, and why?

I am powerfully curious. I'm not sure I'll like the answers, but I'm pressing the buttons anyhow.

This question is very difficult. I believe same sex couples should have some status that provides for all the benefits afforded to married hetero couples.
To me it is the word marriage that stops everyone. No need to rehash all the reasons, ie procreation and so forth.
For the couples it is a marriage in their eyes, and so should it be, requiring a legal dissolution should the union break up.

The whole thing would be what name to give the ceremony that legally joins these two. Heteros do not want to call it a marriage, gays do. Is it really so important that word is used if there were a legal commitment ceremony with all the trimmings and benefits?

Ignorant and intolerant people celebrate their stupidity on a VERY regular basis. I am so sorry that you and your partner had your legal marriage declared invalid after this judgmental decision was made. This must have been a very heartbreaking time for you both. I think you should have the same rights as any married couple and be able to live your life as you see fit. Love and commitment should be applauded not discriminated against just because you are both of the same sex. You deserve far better. I hope that this country will be a FREE country for ALL of its citizens someday because there's sure a lot of LEGAL DISCRIMINATION in it now. By the way, I am a married heterosexual. I wish you and your partner the very best! I hope at some point in time that you will be able to remarry.
