In Dallas, you can plant year round.
The larger the tree, the better your results will be if you plant after the first freeze of the season.
DO NOT plant too deep. The root flair should be at least 1 inch above soil level.
DO NOT fertilize in the spring, but you can in the fall.
Don't expect too many results until the 3rd year.
Keep in mind the saying, "If it dries, it dies"
Live oaks are beautiful trees and will easily live 100 years and add a lot of value to your property.
I STRONGLY suggest spending around $350 to get a 3 inch caliper tree planted and guaranteed. You will save yourself about 15 years as compared to a 10 gallon tree.

Well here in Texas we plant them throughout the year whether its hot or cold. live oaks are very hardy trees. if you plant them during winter, its better for the trees cause they'll have plenty of time to get established before the heat of the summer and you dont have to water as much. you can plant them in the summer too but you have to water more often for them to survive because they are very thirsty trees. Basically, if you buy a 15gal tree, you need to give it at least 20 gallons of water every 4-5 days. if you buy a 30gal tree, you need to give it 40-50 gallons of water every 4-5 days. DO NOT FERTILIZE YOUR TREES FOR AT LEAST 1 FULL YEAR. let the roots develop first. you can use a root stimulator if you want. hope that helps you out!!

Right now is a good time! Especially in zone 4 or 5. Be sure to water it every day, all through the winter.
