First, add 1/8 to 2/9 - that's the amount of inherintence the church didn't recieve.
To do that, you have to give them a common demoninator.
Try 72.
So, that's 9/72 (72 divided by 8 is 9, and 9 times 1 is 9) and 16/72 (72 divided by 9 is 8, 2 times 8 is 16).
Add the numerators: 16 +9 is 25.
So, the amount the church didn't recieve is 25/72
Since 72/72 is the total inherintence, subtract the 25/72 from 72/72 (Subtract the numerators)
72-25 is 47
So, your answer is 47/72

He leaves 1 - 1/8 - 2/9 to the church.

1 - 1/8 - 2/9 = 72/72 - 9/72 - 16/72 = 47/72

So he leaves 47/72 of his estate to the church

I will not do the problem for you, but can tell you how to solve it. You should find the lowest common denominator for both 8 and 9 (that way, you can effectively compare the fractions), and convert the fractions accordingly. After that point, it's easy to see how much the church will recieve.
