I currently have McAfee. Should I stay with them, or is there a better one out there. I have heard McAfee slows your computer down, but it does not on mine as I have bought a new faster computer with dual core processor.

Myself I don't think any security suite serves anyone in their best in their best interest for security. One program, with a firewall, spam blocker, checks mail, antispyware, antivirus and pop up blocker is just expecting to much. The very best single purpose technology as a hard enough time keeping your pc protected

(Alot of computer experts agree as I do about security suites).

Keep Mcafee if you want. Here is a complet list of what I use in my two pc that are all free with the exception of the antivirus program from Beijing, China used by the Government of China. (I use this antivirus in my backup pc).

In my spare time I test on my backup computer all antispyware/antivirus programs to see if the perform as claimed And especially to see which one have embedded trojans/adware either in their program or in the wizard installer used to guide you through the installation.

What is rate as 1-2-3-4-5 is not always the best. Especially when you can find free programs that are light years ahead in technology over the purchased.

In my computer I use the following free programs.

For antivirus you can only use one or you will have serious conflict with your system. You can use three or four antispyware without any conflict.

Avast in my opinion is the very best. Have you Avast for nine plus years and never had one virus. They are out of Prague.

http://www.avast.com This program is free and has one of the very best background scanner that will catch any virus in real time and destroyed the virus before it can enter you system.
Updates auto., two or three times per day. They will ask you for your email address so they can send you a free key that is good for one year. After one year you only have to request a new key.

Antispyware

http://www.ewido.net This company was out of Germany and has since been purchased by AVG. Now the name is AVG antispyware. Still the same program with excellent technolgoy. When you download the program it will come with all functions an if you don't purchase in thirty days they will just remove the background scanner and the auto updates. You will update on a manual basis. Scans all 195,000 objects in my system.

http://www.emsisoft.com This company is out of Austria. Almost the same as the new AVG. A2Squared free version download. They will ask you for you email address so they can send you a key that is good for life. You will get any new free version with the same key. Plus has rootkit protection and rogue dialer protection. (I have ADSL, but use for the added protection).

Firewall

http://www.zonealarm.com Excellent firewall free, if you download their free for home use version. You will get daily updates if any are due, plus if they come out with a new free version they will notify you via automatic and you just say yes, download the new version. The new version will remove the old version. Always best to do is clean install, instead of allowing the new version to copy the files of what you allowed or deny. You will just have to allow, or deny incoming/outgoing traffice again. If you check off remember on Zone Alarm, they will not ask you again if you want to allow or deny the same program.

For "zero day attacks", Attacks that hit before any security company has knowledge of the attack. I use a free software that is is excellent state of the art technology to identify any program that the behaivor is strange, like trying to download hidden files, etc. etc. Will get a pop up with indepth details, so you can decide for yourself if you want to allow or deny. Plus will block all malware. http://www.cyberhawk.com

If you want to spend money you can use what I use in my backup pc. http://www.filseclab.com Twister Trojan Antivirus. This program is used by the Government of China and you only pay a one time fee of $29.99 for live. Will include all new versions, auto, updates, an excellent support. Has a real great background scanner that really works, plus many other features that operate from the icon in the tray. Well worth the one time fee. Most other companies charge you an annual fee. China does not believe in the annual fee.

Hi there,

Unless you really cannot afford to pay for a security solution, I would avoid free programs such as AVG, Spybot and Adaware. Shockingly these three programs used in conjunction now protects you from less than 60% of the threats out there today. In all seriousness, these programs (especially spybot and adaware) are no longer good enough to be your only protection against viruses, spyware and adware (as well as trojans, rootkits and other nasties). They used to be great programs a couple of years ago, but have now been overtaken by programs with next-generation approaches.

Looking at the latest mainstream protection scores it's currently Kaspersky that comes out on top (although seems to generate a high number of false positives), ahead of McAfee and then Norton. However, these scores are all currently dwarfed by another program called Prevx1. This is an all-in-one-solution that protects against all forms of infection (virii, spyware, adware, trojans, rootkits, etc), and has proven to have the strongest protection and clean-up capabilities of all security products available today.

Besides being inherently stronger than conventional security products, Prevx1 also protects against new malware threats that most popular security products do not. Regular security products have to catch a new piece of malware, test it in the laboratory, before creating a signature and making it available for their product to download to your PC - probably once a day at best. During this time, your PC is not protected. Prevx1 however, works in a completely unique way meaning it defends your PC from new malware from the instant it is first seen anywhere in the world - even without signatures and downloadable updates.

This alone is what makes Prevx1 currently the best security solution you can get.

All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

If McAfee is doing a good job for you then keep it. Most of us have our own home made security suites that are free programs.
