I think I respect them less, and try to distance myself from them
Especially if they have a great life, and this pity party has been going on for some time.
I'd suggest counselling, or going to see a doctor, as it could be deppression.
Tr yto be supportive while not getting dragged under
People like this can be so draining

They are seeking attention and personally that is not a quality I enjoy in another person. I would probably treat them the same but have less of a liking for them.

That person is probably looking for attention. Could be they are depressed, could be they need a friend, could be they just like to be the center of attention. I think I would find out what the underlying cause is before making any decisions about them.

i have a customer who comes in my cafe, she does nothing but moan about how ill she is, but still manages to come 3/4 times a week, at first i felt sorry for her, but found out what she was really like when i lost my dad. instead of giving me sympathy all she did was go on about how she felt when she lost her husband. i found my self putting on a polite smile, a nod of the head, when all i wanted to do was scream at her. my stomach turns over whenever she now comes in the cafe, i hate her, and that is a bad thing to say about anyone. but she is only happy when she is miserable. i guess she is lonely, her only daughter has nothing to do with her, i guess be-cos she is a very bitter woman. if she lightened up a bit, maybe people would be drawn to her more

I dislike when someone puts me on a guilt trip. I've learned to not let that happen, especially minor stuff. I think people who continually do this want their own way and could care less how they get it. To put someone on a guilt trip is playing with emotions.
I feel a person who does this is emotionally immature and needs to stop thinking about themselves.
