You don't tell us enough for us to know whether or not you want a traditional publisher or a subsidy press.

Subsidy publishers (like iUniverse, Xlibris, PublishAmerica, etc.) do pay royalties, but are best used for books that have limited potential for sales through bookstores. Examples include an unknown poet's first book, a club cookbook/fundraiser, or the memoir of an unknown person with little publicity potential.

Traditional publishers are best approached through agents. You will need to understand the ideal reader for your book, and why this book will appeal more to that reader than all the other books out there. Remember that you are competing against hundreds of thousands of new titles published each year in the US alone. (Last year, the total number of ISBNs assigned was well above 150,000. Some years it gets close to 200,000.)

To decide what you need I suggest that you evaluate your goals, your resources, your manuscript and your market. Do this very coldly, with an eye toward the competition. The right choices will become clear.
