Those of you who have voted to ban all smoking, do you know how much the government makes HOURLY from those who purchase cigarettes? How are you going to feel when even 1/4 of the smokers choose to quit, and the government has to raise taxes elsewhere to cover the deficit?

It's interesting how "angry" most of the answers are, and how they don't answer my question. My question is about TAXES, not your lungs. And it is nice of you to ASSUME I am a smoker, and not just a person who is worried about where the gov't will go next. Drunk drivers are killing people daily, so will drinking in public be next?

ever notice that hardcore non-smokers never complain about industrial smokestacks, car exhaust fumes, diesel fumes, or cow farts! not the smoke from a stove or fireplace. not the local chicken processing plant or the paper mill?? just about the rights of a smoker. we're in training by our government & a few "i think i'm perfect" people. kinda' like Pavlov's dog.

Well it's not the government who keeps most of the profit, since it's the companies who make the cigarettes
but i see your point, it seems a fair trade to allow people to kill themselves just for money -i'm being sarcastic of course
and i'm answering this question because of the question of illegal immigrants you answered yesterday
yes the correct term is undocumented alien, go educate yourself, and how will you feel when the immigrants are no longer here since the United States's number one, listen closely, NUMBER ONE way of making money in California for the state, the 10th most powerful and richest economy in not the United States, but in the entire world is through agriculture in which 75% of people who work in agriculture are undocumented immigrants, how will the country recouperate from that loss if you have any more quesitons on this topic, or if you feel i'm wrong please feel free to contact me at gisela707@yahoo.com anytime if you don't i guess i'll have to assume you learned you lesson and i'm right

WHile I certainly dont want smoking ANYTHING illegle,I do value my clean air in public places. Those Tax dollars you worry about don't begin to pay for all the healthcare the smokers need.We non smokers already pay for smoker caused illness in higher taxes and insurance!! What we need is a $10 per pack tax on Cigarettes,to help ofset the healthcare you smokers cost us!

That's not really a reason to keep people smoking. I am a former smoker, and do not advocate making public places smoke free, but there truly is no personal benefit you can reap by smoking.

I have smoked for 30 years, I just stoped in Feb.. Stop using the Govt. as a scapegoat. You know as well as I do they have no intention of covering the deficit. You just want an excuse to remain weak, and smoke constantly. When you are my age you will realize smoking is not a good thing. It is not something to be proud of or defended. It is slow suicide. Smoking should be treated like any other shamfull thing. It should be hidden, and done in small groups, with other like minded individuals, like any other perversion. It should be expensive, illegal, and hard to get ahold of. That way killing your self would at least be fun again, Like it was when you first started.

I will feel like I can breathe easier knowing that my tax dollars are going for something more useful than health care for fools who are dying from self induced lung cancer because they were either too ignorant to learn the facts or too weak to do something about it.

I wish that quitting was that easy. I don't think your point is valid.

If it were, the reduction in medical care will make up this deficit.
