A sprain is were muscles and ligaments are hyper extended and bruised or torn. The length of time for healing depends on the severity of sprain and weather or not you hurt more than muscle as ligiments heal slower. When I sprained mine years ago it took years to get the strength in it back and I turned it often so be careful. I know it hurts and I'm sorry. Get well soon and take all of your doctors advice. Keep it elevated to promote blood flow as that will speed healing.

Answers above are not really helpful. A sprain is damage to the ligaments in a given joint. Ligaments connect bone to bone. A strain is damage to a muscle belly or tendon. Tendons connect muscle to bone. They are graded on 3 levels, 1 being mild, 2 moderate, 3 severe. In your case, you are probably experiencing a slight strain in your wrist tendons along with some bone bruising. Ankles typically take longer to heal due to being a weight bearing joint. Practice RICES - rest, ice, compression, elevation above heart when icing, and support with an ACE bandage. Depending on the severity, you can be hurting for 1-6 weeks. Good luck.

Sprains take longer to heal than breaks because it needs rest to heal. A break usually takes a cast and the bone mends itself. When you have a sprain don't forget to ice it until the swelling goes down, rest and elevate it.
