Halo wars is an RTS (Real TIme Strategy) game. It's exclusively for the Xbox 360. I'm definately buying it when it hits the shelves.

It takes place just before Halo 1. I'm pretty sure it's at least starting with the first human/covenant battles at "Harvest", and possibly other battles that took place at other locations on the Ring in Halo 1 while your character is there. (otherwise they'd call it "spartan wars" or something)

The screenshots are weird though because they show Spartan armor that uses an old helmet stlye, and other stuff like shoulder plates that don't match, etc..

Plus there's big bulky Elites shown that must be wearing spacesuits or something..

There's also a trailer for the game on the site.

The game itself is being put out by Ensemble software, instead of Bungie, and they're the ones that did the "Command and Conquer" series.

Also, for the record, Halo was orginially intended to be an RTS game instead of a FPS (First Person Shooter) it tells you all about that on the Halo 2 collectors edition bonus DVD.

Halo wars is gonna be a stratagy game, not to much unlike starcraft. You'll be in command of different unit types, such as marines and spartans, you will be commanding them rather than actually doing the shooting yourself. No word yet as to wether or not you'll get to control the covenant. As far as story lines go, I hear it's going to be more in line with the books than Halo was.
