In my spare time I test on my backup computer all antispyware/antivirus programs to see if the perform as claimed And especially to see which one have embedded trojans/adware either in their program or in the wizard installer used to guide you through the installation.
What is rate as 1-2-3-4-5 is not always the best. Especially when you can find free programs that are light years ahead in technology over the purchased.
In my computer I use the following free programs.
For antivirus you can only use one or you will have serious conflict with your system. You can use three or four antispyware without any conflict.
Avast in my opinion is the very best. Have used Avast for nine plus years and never had one virus. They are out of Prague.
I have used Avast for over nine years an I never had one virus.
http://www.avast.com This program is free and has one of the very best background scanner that will catch any virus in real time and destroyed the virus before it can enter you system.
Updates auto., two or three times per day.
They will ask you for your email address so they can send you a free key that is good for one year. After one year you only have to request a new key.

I am a strong believer in the "decide for yourself" philosophy. There is no shortage of good free antivirus software programs. By far, the most popular are: AntiVir, Avast and AVG. All three are excellent virus scanners and completely free (i.e. no adware). Some time ago, about.com wrote a very good review for each of the three antivirus programs. It's a worthwhile article to read.
"Review: Free Antivirus Software" -- written by Mary Landesman (http://antivirus.about.com/od/antivirussoftwarereviews/a/freeav.htm).
The good and the bad. AntiVir has the best detection rate but does not scan incoming e-mail messages. Avast has a good detection rate but the user interface hard to use and occasional problems updating. AVG has the lowest detection rate out of the three; however, AVG has just come out with an entire new upgrade, AVG version 7.5. I have not had a chance to test it myself, but it has received very good reviews.
If you want a simple easy to use and reliable antivirus program, I would recommend trying AVG 7.5. It doesn't use a lot of resources, it is easy to use and updating virus signatures is a breeze.
By the way, the article has links to all three download sites.
