It's a combination of the physical exertion during sex and the chemicals released in the brain during orgasm. Both of these combine to cause the tired/sleepy feeling after sex.

They are tired to begin with, and sex helps them relax and let go -- figuratively and literally.
The hormones men and women produce at orgasm can lead to the desire to lay back in the afterglow, and that sense of physical peace often leads to sleep.
The ejaculatory release for men, and the inherent letting down of bodily tension, makes men physically tired.
Most people (again, men and women) hold their breath during sex, breathe shallowly or don't focus on breathing. I'll bet the ranch that he's not breathing deeply. That gives him oxygen deprivation, which causes sleepiness. And, it could (rare, though) persist into the next day.

YOu know that seditive drug Oxycotin that is so addictive? Well, during orgasm a man's brain releases a chemical similar to Oxycotin causing an almost irresistable urge to relax and go to sleep. It's also why sleep is so incredibly restful after sex. I'm sure the "let down" of the tension is part of it too, but the overwhelming desire that men have to go to sleep that women don't understand is largely chemical based.

That's a great question! I have always wondered that my self. I work out alot so sex doesn't demand a whole lot of my energy. But after I'm done my eyes become so heavy and I'd like to stay awake and talk to her but I just can't keep my eyes open

It is an inbuilt male reaction to want to sleep after sex. Orgasm releases endorphins that make a man sleepy so that his body can be refreshed. Just make sure that you get a cuddle before he goes to sleep.

Well I can't talk for all guys but...
In my case, sex demands a lot of energy on my part, especially when I orgasm. It is only normal after such a strenuous effort that I feel like taking a nap, eating a little snack, or just smoke a cigarette.

Tired!?! I never get tired after sex. I gain more and more energy and want to go back for more until after 5 - 6 times or so........

Because they lost sperm and energy. Yes, guys are always tired after having sex, but you can feed him aphrodisiac like oysters to replenish his sperm and energy.
