to my calculation the republicans have 50, dems 48, and independents 2. Why are independents counted for the dems.

both independents are liberals, and the repubs only have 49 Jim Webb the democrat is winning in Virginia. Joe Lieberman is a moderate democrat and Bernie Sanders is a self proclaimed socialist. THe likely final math will be 49 conservatives, 51 liberals 2 of which will be considered independents.

The Republicans have 48, the Democrats have 50 and the Independents have 2.
One seat is going to be recounted.
The Independents have already stated that they will caucus with the Democrats.

Because the two independents vote democrat. Lieberman (s/p) is a democrat...his party just did not endorse him (which was a mistake). But he said he will vote with the dems...and Sanders is just about as liberal as you get. So, in reality is 50 to 49...and once this recount in Virginia is done... Dems will have the Senate too.

The two independents can almost always be depended on to vote with the Dems. Now, if they were only Libertarians, some real changes could be accomplished courting their swing vgotes.

1 of those 2 is Lieberman, but after the way the Dems shafted him, if I were he, I would filibuster everything they try to bring up. Then blame them when it fails.
