you can go to http://download.com and do a search for AVG free
it is a free virus scanning software...i like it a lot more than Norton because it isn't as annoying. You might also want to do a search for spybot search & destroy. It is a program that scans for spyware and other bad things and can remove them.

Do get a good virus removal and detection program. I suggest Kaspersky. http://www.kaspersky.com
Do keep it up to date
Do scan 1 a week,.
Do pay the annual fee (you will not be protected if you dont)
Do Get a spy ware removal tool. Try Spybot and Adaware (go to http://www.download.com you get them free and legal)
Do run defrag 1 a month (go to my computer right click on C drive, click tools and hit defragment).
Do get a good book to read about your operating system to help you better understand it.

Don't open attachments from people you dont' know.
Don't think you can go anywhere without getting something (virus).
Don't accept random files from strangers on Messenger programs.
Don't click on Links in messenger programs (most of the time they are viruses)
Don't be paranoid all the time. Play it smart and you'll be good!

If you have Norton antivirus/McAffee Antivirus or anything like that don't worry about viruses. If you don't have anything like this then go and buy Norton Antivirus from a pc store (PC World, Comet, Curry.Digital, or even ebay!) Don't download things willie nillie as there is something called spy ware and this means that in the download, people could be spying on you + your pc, niking your files.etc. To stop this, download a prog called ad aware SE, (Just search for it on google (www.google.com) and clik on 1 of the results)

Hi milo - welcome to the World Wide Web (also called the Internet.) There's so many things to tell you and so little time. So I went to a friend's website where he did all the hard work and prepared an article on how to keep your computer safe on the internet. If you take your time and read through all of it, including all the additional links, you'll be more knowledgeable than most of the people who use computers.

#1. Invest in a good anti-virus software. Or, download on of the free on-line ones (AVG).
#2. Stay away from some sites that are notarious for housing virus and trojans (i.e. cracks/serials/free downloads etc)
#3. Don't panic. You can always go to McAfee, Panda, or AVG and read up on the latest worms, torjans, virus.

If you get one of these nasty buggers----get the software run a scan and remove it.

they're bad. lol just get a virus program like Norton and make sure to keep it updated. Make sure you have a working firewall and try not to go on any sites that might not be protected. Be careful what you download and be suspicious of E-mail attachments.
