I just have to reinforce the advice not to do this by yourself, get a builder or a good size portion of your house might collapse.

I am having this done right now.
1. Hire a contractor to do it - don't do it yourself as there are structural considerations
2. They are taking it out from the top down. Exposed section above the roof first, then the sections inside the house from the top down.
3. You will be left with a large area of roof and interior to fill with structural supports/cosmetics.
4. Consider resale value before you do it. chimneys do add some value to the home. Make sure you're doing the right thing.

Just to reiterate what everyone else has said - Get a builder to do it. A chimney is structural. You could end up with your chimney in your front room, your bedroom in your front room and the gable end in your front room. That wont leave much room for you or much of your house standing.

Dont even think about trying, my ex father in law was hospitalised for 6 months when the gable end crushed him after cowboys had earlier removed the chimney breast!!

Be careful - it's part of the structure of the house.
If you just smash away and remove the chimney breast in the ground floor room then the rest will come crashing down from above. It is structural and part of the brickwork that supports the house

I agree. Chimneys are usually support structures, not just vents for smoke. You should consult a reputable builder and ask him to do it for you. It will be money well spent

its definatly a job for a builder, if it is from top to bottom or if it is just downstair you need to support the upper part with steels to support the wieght it is possible that you need building permision to do it

Please don't even think of doing it yourself, you'll be sitting in a pile of rubble, Make sure your contractor is of the highest calibre and then think again and again, this is not cheap.
