The best thing is not to spend it. Of course. But if you do have to spend, here is what works:
1. Buy big stuff, that you actually know that you need. If you have to, make a list (mental or, better, written) before you go on a PLANNED shopping spree. And that means no impulse buying. The little things are the ones that kill (a mocha here, a muffin there, a shirt on sale that you really didn't need... that stuff adds up).
2. Limit your eating out as much as possible, and if you have to, eliminate it altogether. Instead of spending money on dinner at some restaurant (even fast food) spend it on groceries. It's amazing how much you will save that way. Also, bring lunch with you to work.
3. Buy stuff on sale, or find alternative ways of buying (for example, instead of buying books at Barnes 'n Noble, go to your local library's book sale--they usually have them monthly or so, and you can find books for several cents a piece). Discounter stores are everywhere, and garage sales work too for little, everyday stuff. Ethnic stores are great savers too (authentic ones, in real ethnic neighborhoods, not Cost Plus), plus you can find something unique.
4. Use Craigslist, the PennySaver, even EBay.
5. Thrift stores work too. You just need patience.
Good luck!

If you use female logic you can buy anything on sale and miraculously save. Example: You purchase a $100 purse for $80. Normal logic dictates that you are -80 on the day. If you use female logic you are +20. Now go use that extra $20 and buy something else tiger!

Some credit cards give you cash back for each purchase that you make.
You could also become a 'mystery shopper' and provide feedback to the stores on what the shopping experience is like. If you sign up to mystery shop stores that you regularly go to you could actually get paid to shop.
