I have two spots and some dust on the monitor screen, but when I tried to clean one off, it left a scratch-type of mark on the screen.

The best way to clean a LCD monitor is with a mix of rubbing alcohol and water. Use a ratio of 80/20 - 80 percent water and 20 percent alcohol. Use a soft cloth, lint-free. Do not use paper towels or paper products, they will leave lint all over the screen. Do not spray the liquid directly on the screen put it on the cloth and wipe the screen gently. The LCD screen is very sensitive and prone to scratches. Do the cleaning with the monitor off or else you could damage the pixels.
