Try doing a "search for new hardware" from your "my computer" window and see if XP can identify the sound card for you. If it can't you'll have to open the computer up and look at the sound card. The Type and Model number should be on it. The xp disc has lots of drivers for sound cards and other devices so you might get lucky. If it doesn't have it, then go on line and find the manufacturer's site and download the appropriate driver.
If you're not sure how to open the case up, get some one to help you.
Get used to doing this sort of thing because it will help you a lot in the future.

This sounds like something that happened to me. There's lots you can do. First, I tried eMachines.com (that's my XP's maker name) and called them for help. They sent a free DVD to restore all programs. Well, it literally took off ALL my paid-for programs, fonts and all, and the sound was still gone. But enough of that...here's a few pointers:

> Right click My Computer, then click Properties
> Click the Hardware tab
> Click Device Manager
> Now scroll down through the various programs. Find something called "Sound, video and game controllers" (name varies prolly.)
> Right click EVERY program you find under that, and try to uninstall them. (that might be tough...mine wouldn't uninstall simply because there was no unistall button. Try clicking troubleshoot or pressing delete after you select each.)
> Once you have removed every one you can under that tab, restart your PC.
> After it restarts, it SHOULD try to automatically find the driver and install it by itself.
> If that doesn't work, call Pheonix Technologies. They ought to help.

I'm not sure if this will help you, but it's a shot. I noticed that you don't have any sound card...uhoh...so you might not have that tab at all.

Go for it, though - and after you're done try typing in "installing a sound card" on Google.

If your PC/laptop is an IBM, go to their download site, it automatically detects all your system info and will guide you through a download of the requisite drivers. Assume that you should be able to do something similar with other manufacturers...hope that helps
