I work for a worldwide company and have a fairly senior job. The company has just announced a huge reorganisation and my job has gone, but I've been offered another. I will keep my salary, company car, terms, conditions and pension, but I will report to people who used to report to me. They are far less qualified than me and the new job will be relatively boring.
I'm not ambitious - I have hobbies that are far more important to me. Should I stay, or should I go?

I've been pretty overwhelmed by all the brilliant advice I've received within the first 30 minutes. How on earth can I choose a best answer? Thanks so much to everyone who has responded. Every single one of you deserves 10 points. I'll give it a couple of days and then choose a best answer, but it will be a difficult decision because I truly appreciate all of the feedback.

Every single answer is helping me sort it through my mind.

This is just the first step toward letting you go.

Keep the job, but look in the interim.

I have recently gone through the same thing, almost. I worked for a mom and pop company that was bought out by a big corporate company. 6 people were let go, very dear friends of mine, not just co-workers. We were told upon merging with this company that nothing would change, and everything has changed, except for our name. New computer system, new people, etc. Can't say I care for those types of people. I call them pirates. I would have to say stay at the job and see how it goes, but definitely keep your options open. Start looking for something better now, and then you can decide, when you do get another offer, if it's worth staying or not. Good Luck!

Stay for now, until something comes along with equal pay and benefits.

If you do have to stay, don't let your ego get the best of you. You are still going to be making a great salary, and as long as you know that, that is all that matters. Don't let anyone try to make you feel less, everyone knows where you came from.

But in honesty, that sounds like a pretty screwed up situation if you canm go from being the boss to being bossed around?? Wierd...

I have to say I am kinda going through something similar but I am allowed to cover it up with a story to save face - although I know that the rumour mill is ruthless and those who are in the know will spread it around if they haven't already.

I totally sympathise with what you are going through. In your position I would have to look at whether they have got redundancy schemes and move onwards. I can understand not wanting to hang around to see previous subordinates bossing you around.

On the other hand - if you are not looking for any more than you have been offered stay and make the most of the fact that those senior to you will be earning less for more stress, ha ha!

Looks like they want you to quit, saving them a large severance package, at least. You must have stepped on big toes, perhaps a sincere request for information on the politics used for the decision would help. Have to admit, I had always assumed that these kinds of scenarios only happened to us 'little guy'.

If you were ambitious I would say go. But it sounds as if you enjoy your life outside of work more, maybe work is funding your outside activities. Unless you've been really mean to the people that you now would report to, I would say stay.

If it really doesn't bother you, then there is no need to leave. You should really think about it, though...the way you describe these people you are now reporting to, it does seem like there is some tension and resentment there.

I agree with JaMoke. Maintain your integrity at your current work while looking for a better opportunity else where.

wow, that sucks
if you only care about the money then i would say stay but if it is just too awkward and uncomfortable and you are sure you can find another job then i would say leave.
