Because you too, will pass this way, and you will expect some one to help you when your time comes ....
Helping those now, will show the younger generation that they are supposed to be respectful of thier elders, and help them in anyway that they can.
Unless your going to start killing them off, like you do the infants in abortion mills..???

That is a basic moral issue and depends on your beliefs and world view. Rather than being a matter of law, it is a matter of personal concience.
There is one reason we should take care of the elderly that I think crosses all moral and belief systems: We too will be elderly one day and want a society that takes good care of us.
