Hi, I was wondering if you wanted to know about the US Naval Air Facility (NAF) Atsugi? If you do it's not really in Atsugi but is surrounded by the cities of Ayase(front gate), Yamato, and Yokohama. The closest train station, Sagamino on the Odakyu Line is aprroximately 20 minute walk from the front gate. Ebina station is about a 7 minute rde and central Yokohama city is about 30 minutes away.
On the base they have a nice food court with a sub shop, Taco Bell, a pizzeria, and a Dunkin doughnuts. The Enlisted club has a fast food restaurant that serves sandwiches and BBQ, a more formal restaurant with an aquatic life theme. The club has an area for video slots, a dance floor with mostly rock and pop music and a seperate area for Country western. The Chiefs club serves a great Mongolian BBQ on Friday nights that gets charged by the ounce, however the rice and soup is all you can eat. There are also several Japanese restaurants. Some of them will accept US$ but at their own exchange rates. You can exchange money at the Community Bank (run by Bank of America) or at the Enlisted, Chief, or officer clubs.
The MWR is very nice. They plan trip to all over Japan for very good prices. They go to Fuji, Sapporo Snow Festival, Okinawa, sporting events in Tokyo and Yokohama, and skiing in Nagano(former site of the winter Olympic games). However if you go on trips that are not MWR sponsored trips keep your receipts since MWR will give you 25% of the money back up to a certain amount. This includes hotels, movies, baseball games, ski lift pass, admission to temples, etc. Once in a while they have 50% back.
The base has activities open to the local community several times a year like the Air show and Bon festival.
The closest shopping mall is in Ebina where you can dine on Japanese restaurants traditional and modern or somewhere like the Outback steakhouse.

I live in Tokyo, but my office is in Atsugi (Hon Atsugi). How is it? Not the country side, but not much as as far as interesting and exciting. My company has a large engineering center here, so does Nissan, Cannon and Imada Steel. Outside of the Hon Atsugi station area, the place is boring. Atsugi has the Odakyu line that runs between Odawara and Shinjuku. I take that train everyday. It takes only 50 minutes via an express train to reach Shinjuku. two stops from Hon Atsugi is Ebina, where there is a Virgin Toho Cinema, but Ebina is pretty much nothing except for the shopping center and cinema. You can take the train up to Machida, which is a Tokyo suburb. There are more stores bars, and things to do there. Still Machida is a burb. Since I live in Tokyo, I find it no problem at all to just go into Shinjuku for anything fun. Or maybe you could also go into Yokohama. Yokohama is about 40 minutes away. If you have a car, you could drive to the Shonan area and enjoy the beaches. But the beaches become crowded and cluttered with all the people who visit th ebach when the weather warms up.
Bascically Atsugi is a small-medium sized city, with some large companies setting up shop in town. Some people who work in Tokyo find it better to live out towards the Atsugi area and deal with the crowded trains every morning.

How? Hmm a bit hard to answer...but I lived in Atsugi area, Soubudai Mae station to be exact (I think it was 4 stations away from Hon-Atsugi station) and went to college for 2 years in Hon-Atsugi.
It's a nice area. They've got big department stores and clothing stores around the Hon-Atsugi station. Restuarants are pletiful.
But if you move away from the station there's lots of nature, small creeks, one larger river (I think it was Sagami River), forests, rice fields.
there's also a big shopping mall right by Ebina station which is 2 stations away from Hon-Atsugi. Probably 15 mins away if you’re driving.
Machida is probably the closest station where the younger crowd can party.
Night clubs, bars, restaurants etc. I think Machida station was 7 stations away from Hon-Atsugi (like 25 mins)
If you want to REALLY go out and party you can always change trains at Ebina station and take the JR Sotestu line to Yokohama. (I think it was like 40 minutes away from Ebina to Yokohama.)
Hon-Atsugi is just about an hour away from Shinjuku Station (one of the biggest and busiest station in Tokyo) and that’s not bad. At least you don’t have to change trains. Odakyu Line will take you straight to Shinjuku.
Also there’s an IHOP (International house of Pancakes) in Aiko-Ishida 1 station away from Hon-Atsugi.
