I'm not sure what you mean by a "search".

If you mean how long it takes a Buyer to find something they want, it just depends on how realistic and dedicated they are, and how much knowledge or courage they have. It could be an hour, it could take a year.

If you mean how long it takes a Seller to find a Buyer, it depends on the activity in the area, the price, and the marketing. Again, it could take an hour, it could take a year.

If you mean the search of the Land Records to determine the ownership and lien status, that takes about two to five hours, depending on complexity of the records, but sometimes a busy searcher might take a few days to get to doing it. Shouldn't take more than a week for that.

It depends on the local authority of the area you're buying the property.

At this moment in time, you don't need to do a search if you're only selling a property as its the buyer who does this. In 2007, this is going to change with the introduction of the "Seller Packs" where the vendor has to provide the searches etc.

Assume you're referring to Local Authority Search - it depends on the council but most take no longer than 10 days. Drainage Search about 7 days, Environmental is on-line as is coal.

You are dealing with people. Some are lazy and take ages, some get things moving asap, so from 7 days to 31 days.

You can do it yourself in a day.

If your solicitor outsources searches I'd be peeved if it took longer than a week + time for the solicitor to get in touch with me.

If your solicitor is doing it it themselves it could be anytime from now until doomsday.
