In 2001 i bounced a check apparently in SLC Utah, Well i just found out about it due to a credit report.
The check i bounced was for 7 dollars, and i went to go pay and the lawyer wanted to charge me almost 500 dollars !!
Is this legal ? When does the stature of limitations run out ?

PS(i was leading a terrible life when i was younger but a couple years ago some good friends and God changed my life and i am trying to piece it back together and pay off debts)

Well, the law states that creditors can only put a negative mark on your credit file for 7 years. However, they can harass you for your entire life.

If it was me, I'd bide my time. It's only a couple more years, and no $7.00 debt is worth $500.00!

Just don't give the creditor your new address!

Instead of going through a lawyer you can always send a money order directly to the establishment you bounced the check to. this is legal, and I personally think the lawyer is trying to rip people off. all lawyers do is collect the money because it is their secretaries that write the notices anyway. I have had a few "rubber checks" in my day ( nobody is perfect) and the place where the check bounced always accepted payment.(one place did add like 35.00 fee for it bouncing but was never charged more than that ). Good Luck!

Write out a check or MOney Order, get a receipt, mail it and forget about it.
Include the basic story, the overdraft charge and 5% interest on the money.
You are trying to get away with it 5 years later instead of paying YOUR debt!

No statute of limitations on homicide in any of the 50 states or DC (DC isn't a state nor a state.... for you those that didnt recognize that) that i recognize of.. its open perpetually.. If yer waiting on that.. all I even ought to assert is HA! not gonna take position in North u.s. besides (perhaps Brazil once you've lotssa funds to bribe the federals to not extridite you..)
