I have never tried it, but, the first thought to come to mind is how slick the surface of the pulleys are, how slippery nylons are, and how much they stretch when pulled on.
Given this, I cannot imagine how it would work with something as stretchy and slippery, sliding along a slick surface. As soon as the engine turns over the first time, I would think there would be no traction and nothing would be accomplished--except you got a woman to remove part of her clothing.

It used to work fine in the old days but nowadays cars have a lot more things running off the same belt like power steering, air con etc as well as the alternator so it probably wouldn't be possible on today's cars.

I've heard of this but tend to believe it's more myth than fact. Nylon wouldn't survive the heat found under a modern car's hood! ;-)=

It would work on the old "v" belt pulley's in an emergency but the new serpentine pulley systems would not be an application where this would work.
