With respect to covalent bonds, polarity refers to the tendency of electrons to move towards one of the atoms. Polarity in covalent bonds arises from differences in electronegativity between the participating elements. For example, the covalent bond in a molecule of water, H2O, is polar. Oxygen is more electronegative than hydrogen, so the end of the molecule containing the oxygen atom has a partial negative charge.

OK, there are a lot of answers here so i hope you'll read mine. Polarity in rocks and minerals simply means what orientation they have with respect to the magnetic poles. The poles reverse periodically. Right now we are in a period of what is called normal polarity, but there have been many times when we have been in reversed polarity. When magma comes out of a volcano it cools and hardens. As it's hardening the minerals, the iron ones, align themselves with the earth's magnetic field. So, in a nutshell polarity means to me, was the earth's magnetic field normal or reversed when this rock formed. By the way, normal is when the north end of the compass needle points north, reversed is when the north end would point south. just incase you didn't realize what i meant

Simply put, it's the tendency of one part of the molecule (the side with the more electronegative atom--the ones on the upper left hand corner of the periodic table of elements, excluding the noble gases) to hog all the electrons, forming a partially negative charge on that side. The other parts of the molecule would then be partially positive.

The more electonegative the atom, the more polar the molecule. However, the position of the electronegative atoms can cause the charge to be cancelled out (as in carbon tetrachloride).

Polarity in a molecule is observed when the molecule exhibits partial charges.

Like H2O has a partial pos end the H and a partial Neg. end the O.

This is actaully how water in a glass is all together instead of separating itself into little single molecules of water. The oxygen of one water molecule is attracted to the pos. hydrogens of another water molecule.
