when i post on a blog or website, or upload my own pix on a hobby site etc, who owns the copyright on that material? by virtue of my uploading it have i given it to the website owner for his copyright? what does this mean:© Copyright 2006

there are no Terms of Service posted anywhere on the site..only the above which is added to every page and post.

Depends on the site you post on. Technically you should own your own material, be it writing or photos. However, some site will take copyright ownership if you agree to their terms of service.

The quote you list above would tend to indicate that the user retains his/her rights over the material posted.

BTW, I think everything posted on Y!A is owned by Y!A.

Each website is different it is important to read their terms of service agreement, typically though most sites will state in the TOS that you will be giving them the copyright on any material you upload onto their website, an example of a TOS is below:

Users acknowledge and agree that all content produced by this site or its users become the tangible and intellectual property of website and is copyrighted accordingly. Any content produced by this website may be used by website for any business purpose whatsoever.

Who owns the rights to your uploads and posts can differ site to site, to find out on a specific site read their terms of service, or email them

You own the copyright. No matter where its hosted or published, you retain ownership of any poblication or image you upload.

If you want any type of recourse should your publication or image used elsewhere (for profit) without your permission, then you need to register your work and apply for a copyright.

It means, if you take any of the data or copy it you could face criminal charges.

It's called electronic data theft.
