I am taking a trip the beginning of December and I'm trying to pack lightly and appropriately.

The average hi in SF is 56 and low is 43. Record high was 75 and record low was 24. Average rain is 2.8 inches. January and February have more rain by almost double.

We have had in the last say 5 years, a couple of really cold years. People in mid west and east coast don't laugh...but one year it was day time highs in the 30s to 40s. I remember driving to SFO very early one morning from the north bay and it was 24 outside at 7:30am. It can rain and be foggy, or totally sunny. I have actually been most cold at 4th of july fireworks in SF. It was much colder than xmas day.

Good rule of thumb for SF is to always pack in layers. That is the best bet for SF all year round. Fleece is your best friend. But a good coat, scarf and gloves can't hurt.

Despite popular belief, San Francisco has comfortably moderate weather. In December it can get gusty occasionally and rainy, but mostly just foggy or overcast with light sprinkles. Though, you can never tell what turn any weather is going to make. And, I disagree with the first answer you got above... it HAS snowed in SF before. It happened early this year toward the end of winter when we had unusually chilly weather.
Bring a hooded sweatshirt and a raincoat or parka, oh, and shoes that won't get soaked easily just in case you experience wetter than usual conditions.

mostly 40-mid 50's. Though on some days it may (rarely) gets as high as 60. The fog isn't as bad as in the summer time but its cold and rainy several times a week. Bring a jacket and vest (do that year round). Bring some t-shirts of course (in case it warms a little) but don't expect to go to the beach. its wayy too cold for that.

bring an umbrella and a windbreaker. But, if its not raining, it will be one of those fall like days where its cold but the sun is out. if there's no wind, it will be plesant.

Cool and damp. I wear jeans and polo shirts all year round and just add a rain coat in the winter. It never really gets cold here, but them I'm a northern English bloke and we don't think 40s and 50s is cold.

Usually between the 40s and 50s and rainy. You could probably get away with a raincoat, a good sweater and some tee shirt and jeans.
