between 7/12 and 3/4 (which is 9/12) you have 8/12 which reduces to 2/3

between 3/4 (which is 9/12) and 11/12 you have 10/12 which reduces to 5/6

A fraction is in its lowest term when the top number cannot be divided into the bottom number any more (In whole numbers).

So 7/12ths is the lowest term of that fraction. 7 will not go into 12 any more times without leaving a remainder.

Had it been 6/12, then 6 would go into 12, twice, so divide each number by 6, making it 1/2, a half

18/54 - Divide both by 18 and you get 1/3, a third

And so on..........
