Having lived in Europe for much of the last 17 years, most "nations" don't hate the United States. Certainly, many people don't approve of the direction of our foreign, and even domestic, policies but typically individuals don't hate us.
I've never met anyone from some obscure town in France talk about how much they hate "Joe Schmo" from Wisconsin. Certainly, governments feel strongly about each other, but individuals usually aren't informed enough to make judgements about other individuals on the other side of the world.
Of course, nations and governments are always going to do what is in their own best interest. Even ours.

I am from a "western" country... New Zealand. Generally, Americans are viewed as being dickheads... people think they are arrogant and too proud.
I personally don't like America as a nation... I hate the way americans are so patriotic and proud. They believe in making money, money and more money at the expense of other people. I hate the way "everything is big in America". Why does everything have to be big? That's nothing to be proud of. And why are americans so proud? Your society is nothing great. Most americans are pigs and crack whores. It doesnt make any sense. The only reason america is so "great" and powerful is not because of your so called freedom but because of the amount of natural resources you own. If Iraq had killed all the indians and taken america as their own maybe we would be looking up to a superpower of Arabs not caucasians.
As I say, all americans do is pollute the earth with chemicals and useless crap, eat all they can, get as fat as possible and bicker endlessly about politics and "terrorism". dont forget what plato said: "no human thing is of serious importance."
maybe if you were an iraqi or something you would view americans as terrorists. After all, you people are the invaders.. you came with your tanks and guns and invaded their country illegally, murdering and destroying as you went.
to be honest, americans make me ashamed to be white.

It is completely irrelevant whether other nations like or hate us.
If a nation agrees with what we are doing, they voice their approval, and maybe even help us a tiny bit.
If a nation disagrees with what we are doing, they voice their opposition, but essentially do nothing.
Either way, we gain or lose very little, as to whether they like us or not.
Need an example? We had great good will after 9/11. Did that goodwill translate into help from our traditional allies when it came to doing something they disagreed with, namely Iraq? Nope! Only from the UK, and only because Tony Blair believed it to be in their best interests too. Otherwise, the other nations just complained, but did nothing.
So much for international good will.

I think is the way the US wants to rule the world and get into other nations bussiness. Is the way that they do it. Our nation lies, controls and if you think about it we no longer have freedom.
