becuase the first thing the new democratic house and senate would have done would have been to fire him. i think
1. to beat them to it
2. to make bush look better...like he wants to work with the house and senate

This is happening now, as apposed to before, because the Republican majority had done barely any oversight, primarily in the Iraq war. When the Dems start handing out subpoenas, and the war profiting, deception and cover up and Rumsfeld's responsible for will finally be clear as day. It won't be just someone's opinion anymore, its the facts that the GOP has been hiding.

In order to give the appearance of a change in direction on Iraq, the administration needed to dump Rums, which the new Congress would have called for once they convene. But the entire adminstration is working on the war and its overall strategy, so its all for naught.

Too much pressure, 8 retired generals asked for his resignation. And probably the outcome of the elections yesterday as well.

I'm sure he was asked to or at least was given a hint to.
Bush is just now beginning to try to save his presidency by
throwing the rats to the lions.
Staci M (above) is also right to assume that the democratic congress would demand his firing and that Bush is trying to look pro-active.
