I am about to redo my back yard and am getting conflicting information. I know it won't work in full shade but the area gets some sun in winter and much more in summer.

Zoysia can take some shade, but you can not EVER spray weed control or you will kill grass.
St. Aug has to have at least 4 hrs of DIRECT light to live and is a good choice.
All depends on where you live.

Zoysia is a hot sun loving grass. I would try a small spot to see what happens. Zoysia grass is not cheep. There is a tall fescue grass on the market that is advertised as spreading like Zoysia does. Home Depot sells it. It called water saver. I planted it in my back yard and so far so good
