What makes anime/manga so popular is variety. Here's a few that are popular:
Action --->
Naruto, Inuyasha and Bleach are recommanded for people new to anime.
Black Cat and Hunter x Hunter has quite a fanfare too.
Sport---->
Airgear (rollar-blading gone 10x more extreme because of technology.
Whislte! (I hate soccar and sports overall, but I loved this series)
Romance/Shojo (Girl stories)---->
Fruits Basket. (I would be really surprised if you hated it)
Nana (Intended for an older teen audience. The manga spawned a live-action and an anime)
Fullmoon wo Sagashite
DNangel
Comedy--->
Ouran High School Host Club

uhmm - La Blue Girl is adult hentai (porn) beware,....
Anyway, even in Borders Books and Barnes & Noble, you can get some nice "modern" Anime in mostly DVD format. Though I might suggest checking out Blockbuster Video, they have a good selection (at least the ones I've visited - for renting/exploring [of the non-pornographic variety] And they also sell used Anime DVD's {the drawback about watching Anime on the Networks i.e. Toonami, is the commercial interruptions & editing for commercial breaks} Also - Downloads from online sources can be suspicious as you never know when you download a virus piggy-backing an innocent Anime - Free? well so is the Risk, and fixing a crashed PC gets expensive).
I suggest checking out some of the classics before you look into the more recent offerings, Though Ghost in the Shell 1 & 2 is considered State of the Art as excellent examples to add to any collection. I'm fond of Appleseed myself, though it doesn't compare to the original manga (yeh I have the original first printing of the Appleseed Series).
uh try to get classics like Speed Racer, Star Blazers, Capt. Harlock Space Pirate, and Robotech. Also if you can get it you might like Bubble Gum Crisis (mostly girls without the sleaze, and basically an Action Fighting kind of Anime).
Good luck & welcome to the party & genre of higher quality cartoons
aloha!!

The first anime i ever watched was Vampire Hunter D. Me along with a few friends i know also say that this was their first too. But i didnt really excell to watching more until I started watching Sailor Moon. Then eventually DBZ. Shows like these are good firsts for views in their tweens like i was. Current ones that i recommend to watch would have to be One Piece *non dubbed* and Naruto.
If you really like to start out. Then do what i did which helped progress it even more and go to your local video store and rent them if available. They'll most likely have old animes like Galaxy Express 999, Akira, and probally Roujin Z. Akira is definetely one to begin with for mid teens.

Well, I suggest an anime with not that many episodes, you know, so you don't spend the rest of your life watching a billion episodes and then hate that anime. Try Ouran High School Host Club, Chobits, Erementar Gerad, Fullmetal Alchemist. When you love anime, try ones with a lot of episodes like Naruto.

no surveys, no scams, just the full game!
Naruto vs Bleach has a very smooth and flawless animation, with superb graphics and a wide arrangement of different attacks which can lead to more powerful and specialized combination attacks.
I love it!

i agree with cindy s but if you are really really new you might want to start with something a little more simply like (i'm gonna hate my self for even mentioning this) salior moon( not my cup of anime) or dragon ball( not dbz it gets a little crazy). also ranma 1/2 have and ronin warriors (damn good anime) but mostly the little kid stuff to get you use to the type of humor and plots that come along in alot of anime. then when you find out your favorite type go more into it.

I would have to reccoment Naruto, InuYasha and/or Fruits Basket. They are all very good and entertaining anime AND manga...you can check them out at wikipedia.com, and if/when u read about Fruits Basket, it may seem a little stupid, but once you actually watch it, its actually very funny!!! Naruto...is the best anime, I absolutely love everything about it, from the characters to just the whole play-its just so awesome!!!

Akira, Vampire Hunter D
I've heard the Full Metal series is good.
I stopped awhile back though sorry and I 'm not current in it. But Akira is always a good one. I can't believe nobody listed it?! Except Crow.
