To me it is "The Shining" by Stephen King and probably Jack Nicholsons best film.

Any Japanese horror film... they don't mess about with masses of blood and gore and screaming, which usualy just makes a film laughable (e.g. Texas Chainsaw massacre: what a load of tripe). It's all pretty low budget and concentrates more on atmosphere, so that the fear is grinding and slowly builds up tension. Ringu (everyone seems to find that scary, but it's not really.... Dark Water, Ju On, (all been rehashed badly by Hollywood). You should be able to get those easily on Tartan dvds.

Also, try some South Korean horror films, they're usually quite fun, e.g. A Tale of 2 Sisters ( ithink hollywood is going to do a shitty remake of this too... great! rehashed ideas, done worse than the originals... why bother?).

The omen / old , the omen / remake . It's really scary . I watched that and I had to sleep with the lights on for a month. And I'm hard to scare , cause I'm a scary movie freak. And all of the exoricse movies will give you and your friends a big scare.

The only film that has genuinely scared me was the 1997 Referendum Party Election Broadcast.

Depends on what your friend finds scary. I personally don't go for the teen slashers & fing the 'Based on True Story' films a lot scarier as they did or could've actually happened. Something that can be thought provocing can leave you traunatized as well. Try something like 'Wolf Creek'. Australian backpacker murders. No ghosts or zombies, just total carnage.

Event Horizon...has Lawrence Fishburne and Sam Neill in it. It's really good, more suspenseful than scary though. Hellraiser was a good one too, the first one. I know there's like 20 sequels lol.
