It came on yesterday, car seems to be ok. Oil was a little low so I put more in. Noticed that the oil was pretty dirty so I am gonna get an oil change today. Besides that, any other troubleshooting tips? I don't want to take it to the shop unless I have to. Thanks!

Yes you do need to take it to the shop. This light indicates that your cars onboard computer saw something that it did not like. It could just be a sensor malfunction. But the only way to find out is take it to a reputable garage and have them run a scan test on your computer. What ever caused the light to come on will be stored in the computers memory.

Your computer system has detected a malfunction. An oil change will not cure this problem. Have the computer scanned by a reputable auto technician. DO NOT TAKE IT TO AUTO ZONE the parts salesperson has no more knowledge than you do. The code the computer gives does not always indicate the problem but auto zone loves to sell parts to people that are naive enough to listen to them.

i work for chevy.. that ses light is not because you need an oil change it means the computers has found a problem sometime a loose gas cap will cause that light to come on but if its tight the only way to shut it off is to go into the shop and find out what caused it to turn on... sorry and good luck!

You can get a scanner that will read the code on any car from 96 on. Use it on your friends cars and look like a genius.
Autozone is a good place. Dave is an idiot who's been trashing them every chance he gets for some reason. There's a reason that so many people in here refer to them when they buy parts.

Do what you state you are going to do...change oil, filter, air filter and fuel filter. In most cases, the light will go off, but if not, you are stuck going to a mechanic to have them read the code(s) off the ECU to find out why the light is on, then reset the system. Hope all is well!
