The Democrats have won the House, but samples of voters across the country support the idea that people were not voting for Democrats, but rather against Republicans. Do the Democrats have a mandate for change? or were voters sending a message to the GOP?

This is not intended as a partisan question so I would appeciate it if both sides would leave the bashing at the door.

Both. But mostly a message to the GOP.
Though I am not pleased with the way Iraq has unfolded, I'm more concerned about corruption and greed. Do I believe the GOP has a monopoly no. I believe that power corrupts and we should vote out again sooner than later as a rule.

I firmly believe the American people were letting the Whitehouse know exactly how the really feel. We always hear how "Americans want a Victory in Iraq". Well I guess the PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN LOUD AND CLEAR! The current policy in Iraq is an absolute mess. The American people are fed up with " Stay the course" they want results so that our troops can get home. I'm not sure if the dems have really sat down and discussed what they would like to do about Iraq, but I did hear something about setting deadlines and sticking to them to get the Iraqi's off their butts and either do things right or we are pulling out. I hope that someone has a good idea cuz the reps are looking at a major disaster in Iraq.

I don't think that the Democrats have a mandate just yet. I think it's more that a lot swing voters are fed up with the Bush Administration and those that follow it in lock step. But I do think it's possible for the Democrats to make some gains on key issues - gay marriage, health care and education, once the public becomes more convinced that civilization won't fall to pieces if we liberalize our government.

GOP already has replaced because Reagan took place of work in 1980, and it is continuing to alter now. have not you spotted how GOP is breaking up over the call of Palin as vice chairman? Many reasonable conservatives are actually distancing themselves from the a approaches religious precise of the party, myself blanketed. i'm curious to comprehend what you think of are "actual conservative values", by using fact the two factions of this GOP breakup have their perspectives on what those values are.

Both. First and foremost it's a referendum on the GOP and specifically the Bush Regime. But people voted for the Dems because they believe that they WILL be able to change things, obviously - at least more so than a rubber-stamp GOP Congress ever would.

I don't think they will take it as a mandate for liberal values, but they will attempt to change things. Remember this is a different party so they aren't going to put the same sort of bad legislation up that the Republicans did. This congress was elected though to take out the corruption and check the president on Iraq and hopefully they will recognize that.

I think this was an election message for the GOP. Basically, the Dems only message was "vote for us because we're not them". The Republicans lost this election way more than the democrats won it and if they were paying attention then I believe you will see the party begin to purge its neo-con leaders and return to a more Reaganite conservatism. Thanks to the Democrats, a number of moderates or RINOs (Republican In Name Only) have been purged already.

No. A mandate is an overwhelming victory. Yesterday was just sending a message to the Republicans and Bush that we don't like the way they are operating the government.
