my wife is due to give birth in feb and i had an interview today where he asked me if i would be taking any time off, wtf do i say to that i just said im not sure yet, but of course i am. he also asked me how much i want to earn? just tell me how much your going to pay for christ's sake.

but if i've said 20k and the next guy says 16k who is he going to employ?

1. I would ask what the company benefit is for paternity leave, if any. You could say that you would want to be sure that mother and baby are well and stable (who is going to deny you that?) That would equal up to a week off.

2. The salary... always a yucky question. If you were fairly paid in your last position, then add 5% to it for a starting point - as long as the benefits match up. I always say that my salary is just part of the total compensation package - especially with a new family. you need to know how much insurance will be, vacation, days off, etc.

I guess this guys been burned before. From an employers perspective, I'd want him to interview my perspective employees. From an interviewees perspective, it sucks, but you have to tell the truth. Lying in an interview is usually cause for dismissal anyway.

As far as the money thing goes, thats a fair question. You need to know what the range is for your field and where you deserve to fit into that range with yours skills. And just tell them. An employer will pay more for someone who can explain WHY they are worth more. I won't hire someone who won't tell me what they want and why they should get it.

Sure it would be nice (for you) to be able to take a job knowing that you are just filling time until something better comes along, but that is exactly what the employer is trying to prevent. He needs someone who will stay long enough to make a contribution to his company. Not just kill time for a few months until something comes along in his salary range.

Its a tough world and there is alot of competition from other people for good jobs.

Tell them what you want and why THEY will benifit by giving it to you.

I didn't think it was legal for them to ask questions like that. You might want to check with someone about this. How much do you want to earn? Did you tell him "as much as you."
