109

2006-11-10 15:20:08 · answer #1 · answered by arpita 5 · 0 3

Just looking at the equation it is 105. Using BODMAS. There are no Brackets or Division operators so the first operation is multiplication. 10x 2 = 20. Therefore, re-ordering the equation in the order it should be looked at, it could be written as (10 x 2) + 86 + 5 - 6. Which would give 20 + 86 + 5 - 6. Which is 111 - 6 = 105.

If it was a trick question, then just adding numbers, it is -6 + 10 + 2 = 6.

If the -6 is thought to be just 6, then it is 6 + 10 + 2 = 18.

Or adding all the representations of numbers it is 86 + (-6) + 5 + 10 + 2 = 97.

Making the (-6) a positive the answer would be 109.

If you were looking at it from a numerological aspect. Then adding the numbers could be 6 + 1 + 0 + 2 = 9

Or (-6) + 1 + 0 + 2 = -3

Or 8 + 0 + 6 + 6 + 5 + 1 + 0 + 2 = 28 if counting the numerical representations of the words.

Or 8 + 6 + (-6) + 5 + 1 + 0 + 2 = 16

It's open to interpretation, and the quiz master would set it's interpretation of the question, so it's bollocks!!! Don't waste your money on a phone call!!!!

Take your pick
6 + 10 + 2 = 18
or
6 + 1 + 0 + 2 = 9

Why not (-6)?
The minus sign indicates subtraction "eighty six - 6"
The subtrahend, 6, is positive.

As to solving the equation;
x = 86 - 6 + 5 + 10 • 2
x = 86 - 6 + 5 + (10 • 2)
x = 86 - 6 + 5 + 20
x = (86 - 6) +5 + 20
x = 80 + 5 + 20
x = (80 + 5) + 20
x = 85 + 20
x = 105

Yep, 105, since you'd do the multiplication first (10 x 2 = 20), then addition and subtraction, so 86-6+5+20.
