Why is it we burn Guy Fawkes, when the man was hanged ,drawn, and quarterd, an unimaginable way to die. Do you think the Goverment will ban this in the future, on pollution and saftey grounds.

Burning someone in effigy has always been a way of showing your disaproval of that person and what they believe in (and often to celebrate their downfall).

In the aftermath of the failure of the Gunpowder plot, the protestant population of the country burned Guy Fawkes in effigy as a way of celebrating the failure of the catholic polt and to show support for the government. The tradition then just stuck around.

Bonfire night, is meant to be about celebrating the fact that Guy fawkes was captured and his terrorism plot against the British government/ parliament building was foiled.

But how many people really beleive this? Was guy fawkes/bonfire night really set up by the government as a day of celebration or created by the british people?

I believe that we celebrating guy fawkes himself. Not exactly sure of the guys politics, but would like to know.

We've been burning little men on bonfires since long before Guy Fawkes came on the scene.

Guy Fawkes appeared to be seeking to turn over his country (whose execution technique at the time was as you describe) to foreign rule from Rome, whose popular way of terminating millions (Inquisition, etc.) was burning. So, aside from being more fun, this is a way of saying, "Burn the guy who would burn us."

Presume it is to do with the gunpowder plot - I'm sure the government will ban this eventually on the ground you said.

- - instead of moaning about the pollution caused, i think they should take it as an opportunity to see what effect we can have on the atmosphere in such a short time. just because you cant see the pollution we usually produce-- doesn't mean its not there !!!!
