Interesting metaphor.
I am supposing you are in the position of a subordinate and the scruff grabber is in a position of authority. It matters not. If you are suffering an infliction you have earned the right to make the necessary jokes and commentary to help you deal with your convalescence.
People on the outside of the experience really have nothing to say about the issue and they need to take their bleeding hard multi-cultural Political correctness and shove up their a-s-s until they can taste it. These people just want to sound important and special.
However...if someone who also is suffering from an 'in-grown toenail' tells you your comments are not funny, or that it is offensive, then you may want to really examine that which you said...then, if you think it is appropriate...you can tell them to go get bent too.
note to self---Metaphor confuses people on Yahoo

A thorn in the side...not need for violence even if other were suffering the same fate as you. You take counsel and deal with it in the appropriate manner otherwise blood will flow just as it would if yohad pulled out that ingrowing toenail.
If you shape you life whilst you are young then you will not have a thorn in your side of your own making.

I would say "Listen, ya freak! I actually got one of these and yes I am short one toe. So unless you can make that claim, let go of my neck before I kick ya on your McNuggets."

I am a very private person, and prefer to deal with such matters in a discreet manner; not subject for public discussion.

I would feel pretty annoyed, it's all pc... the person who just pulled you up though must have an in-grown toenail, so I'd tell them to stop biting their toenails the dirty bugger. ( well I'd mutter it under my breath anyway! )

I would say, "I have an in-grown toe nail. I need this levity to deal with it. I am not offended. Why don't you loosen up and let me deal with this how I need to?"

I'd be angry, cause this is about 'my' toe, so no one can tell me what to do, or say or think about it. No-one can tell me how to react to my given situation. it's about me. and that can't be changed.
