Do you all think that a great athlete is born that way or was it more perspiration? Was Jordan the greatest NBA player because he worked so hard or was it more that he had the right genetics with practice. The article below argues Jordan was Jordan mostly do to work ethic. Jerry Rice the greatest WR ever also had a tremendous work ethic. It still seems pretty silly to say a 5'8 man is going to ever have a chance to be a NBA all star I don't care how great his work ethic is.

It's alot of both. Genetics are what gets you to that pro athlete status and hard work and preparation are what separates you from the group and takes you to the next level. Without genetics, a person can practice and prepare as much as they want, but it will honestly take you only so far. There have been many people with a ton of heart, but how many of them actually were true champions. Alot of them were scrappers and a few squeaked in as champion, but you have to have a certain genetic make-up to really excel at athletics.

I'd say both, but to be the GREATEST athlete in your sport, you need talent first and foremost. If I wanted to be the best basketball player, sure, I could work real hard, but I would still fall short of those who were taller, more athletic and had a knack for the sport.

It's both. It does take practice, practice, practice. But if you're a klutz like me all the practice in the world won't help.
